10 Red Flags & Green Lights When Picking An Android App Development Agency

Most Android projects that fail were doomed from the start in the sales process, not in the build. After 750+ shipped Play Store apps and ~120 rescue engagements, here are the warning signs (and confirmation signs) every founder should know before signing.

Red flags · Walk away

  • “We can develop your Android app in 4 weeks for $9,000.” It must be a statement from offshore template builders, or a low-quote bait-and-switch. Real US Android apps don’t cost $9k.
  • Pure Java codebases in 2026. Google has been Kotlin-first for 8 years, so if a team tells you they are Java-only in 2026, they are selling you legacy tech debt.
  • They’ve never mentioned Jetpack Compose. 75%+ of new production Android UIs are Compose. If they're still pitching XML + RecyclerView, you're hiring the past.
  • No fragmentation strategy. Developers and QA teams that rely solely on emulators often miss real-world bugs. So if they are not proactively offering a device matrix, they’re likely doing the bare minimum. Depending on emulators for testing custom mobile applications often leads to crashes.
  • Portfolio is presented via screenshots only, with no live Play Store URLs. If they don’t have Play Store listings for their Android applications with download counts, that's the biggest red flag.
  • Won’t share named client references you can call. If they don’t share three client references and their contact information, you can verify and ask why.
  • No named PM or Android lead. Don’t mention the name of project managers or the lead who is going to lead your Android product development. A general statement saying “our team will handle” is just a distraction.
  • The contract has no IP/Play Console Ownership Clause. it's necessary; otherwise, you won’t be the owner of your Android app.
  • Slow/generic responses pre-contract. Watch their behavior during the sales phase. If they’re slow to communicate and provide generic answers before you pay them, it is a glaring red flag.
  • No post-launch SLA. The Android operating system needs monthly update compatibility checks. Who fixes the Android 17 break otherwise?
